Mountair Christian Church

About Us

Mountair Christian Church is a community of faith where we strive to be disciples of Jesus who make disciples of Jesus.  We are a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination.

History
Mountair was founded in 1921.  It has always met in this neighborhood but moved from a location on Ames Street to the current location on Benton Street in 1953.  Throughout its history Mountair has been made up of people who have a deep desire to serve the community and see their faith in Christ make a difference in the world.  This has resulted in many efforts to serve others--some of which are still going on today.  Every organization or group builds on the contributions of those who come before, and at Mountair we are grateful to have a heritage filled with people who have been committed to Jesus Christ.

Present
Mountair is a church in transition.  Many of the people who comprise our church have been here for more than thirty years and have seen the church and the neighborhood change significantly.  As we have begun taking intentional action to connect with our community and be open to young people and families the composition of the church has begun to change.  The fact that the church voted to call a young pastor in September of 2009 is one evidence of the desire of the people at Mountair to see it be a church that has renewed life and seeks to live "outside the walls" as a blessing to the neighborhood.

Future
In the future Mountair will continue to see the neighborhood change.  The construction of the lightrail two blocks south of the church and the accompanying development in the area will significantly impact the demographics of the area.  We are committed to preparing for those changes while staying grounded in the way of Jesus.  Our vision for the future is to see a church that reflects the neighborhood as an intergenerational and multicultural congregation.  We will be more and more connected and involved in our neighborhood.  We will partner with other ministries, schools, and businesses to be a positive influence on our community.  We will develop our facilities to be a resource to the community.  To a large extent the future of Mountair will be determined by those who join in the mission of Christ with us (and that might be you!).
